I read the post, but now I wonder - my daughter did not read THE GIVER in elementary, and I thought it could sometimes run into some parent resistance even in middle school. Is it unusual to not be one of the school offerings by 5th grade? She's in 6th grade now, and she's read all 3 of the related books (some of my very favorite books ever!), but I would have liked for her to have been able to participate in a group discussion. I had hoped she'd have to read it in middle school!
